Iris flowers are found worldwide, with over 300 species known to date. The name 'iris' comes from the Greek goddess of the rainbow, and the plants are named for the beautiful rainbow of colors found among their flowers. Grown primarily in temperate northern climates, iris are found in Europe, North America, and Asia. In its natural environment, it is found in dry, rocky areas. Other species predominate along riverbanks and meadows. Iris are great for naturalizing areas, and once they get going in a particular location, they can quickly colonize it, creating large, showy areas of blooms each spring.
